$5 Target Coupon Hits Bullseye in July

An online coupon for $5 off of a $50 purchase at Target.com received more than 14,000 clicks in July 2009, making it the most popular online offer at coupon aggregator RetailMeNot, which recently released its coupon-use data (pdf) for the month. The site also reported that a $10 off of a $25 purchase at Dick’s Sporting Goods was downloaded 4,998 times and was the most popular printable coupon on the site.

July marked the first month that RetailMeNot separately reported both its online and printable-coupon savings numbers. Overall, consumers saved $102 million in July by using online coupons, based upon approximately 3.5 million page views multiplied by average user savings of $29 per coupon used. Printable coupon users downloaded 260,326 coupons and saved $1.3 million, based upon an average of $5 savings per coupon downloaded. This is an increase over the approximately $1 million saved with printable coupons in June 2009.

In July, the site featured 236,701 online coupons for 36,127 retailers and 180,000 printable coupons for 72,000 stores, brands and restaurants. Sales generated through RetailMeNot.com for the monthwere approximately $18 million , a year-over-year change of 80%, from $10 million July 2008.

Total Savings Grow

Since RetailMeNot began tracking its coupon use in mid April 2009, consumers have downloaded a total of 722,422 printable coupons and have potentially saved $3.6 million. Online coupon savings since the program began total $543 million.
The RetailMeNot site saw 9.7 million visitors in July 2009, a year-over-year change of 95% from 5 million in July 2008.

  • The 10199 zip code in New York, NY ranked #1 in the top-10 list of zip-codes searched for printable coupons. The same zip code was also tops last month, in RetailMeNot’s June 2009 findings.

  • New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey are the top-three states using online coupons, while Kentucky, Minnesota and New Jersey use the most printable coupons.

  • 29,869 coupons on the site were shared by users in July.
  • 452,360 votes on coupons were submitted by users.
  • Members of the RetailMeNot.com site community generated 14,427 comments about coupons and related topics.

About the data: RetailMeNot Printable aggregates printable coupons from Valpak.com, redplum.com, moneymailer.com, Retaurant.com and Clipper Magazine and makes them searchable by category, brand and location. The site also offers online coupons from numerous retailers. Coupon and shopping trends in the report are based on a compilation of visitor data from RetailMeNot.com and RetailMeNot Printable for July. The approximate savings for printable coupons are calculated based on an average of $5 savings per coupon downloaded. The approximate savings for online coupons are based on the number of online page views multiplied by an average user savings of $29 per coupon used.
