The production and sale of hemp-based products such as cannabidiol (CBD) was made legal (for the most part) in the US with the signing of the 2018 Farm Act. Although CBD has only been legal for less than one year, about 1 in 7 US adults (14%) say they have used CBD products, per a survey from Gallup.

Young adults are the most prominent group to use CBD products thus far. One-fifth (20%) of 18-29-year-olds say they have used a CBD product, followed by 16% of 30-49-year-olds and 11% of 50-64-year-olds. With close to half (49%) of adults 65 years and older not being familiar at all with CBD products, it comes as little surprise that only 8% of these older adults have used a CBD product.

Along gender lines, more women (47%) are at least somewhat familiar with CBD products compared to men (44%). More women (15%) than men (12%) also say they have used CBD products.

Almost twice as many adults living in the western region (21%) of the US say they have used CBD products compared to those living in the East (11%) or Midwest (11%). In the South, where very few states have gone as far as legalizing the use of cannabis for medicinal use, 13% of adults report having used a CBD product.

So, for what reasons do individuals use CBD products? Two-fifths (40%) of the adults surveyed say they use CBD for pain, while one-fifth (20%) say they use it for anxiety. Some – though fewer – Americans turn to CBD products primarily for conditions such as insomnia (11%), arthritis (8%), migraines/headaches (5%) and depression (2%), to name a few.

Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that a study of US adults from Nielsen found that, if they could use cannabis legally, respondents would use it to alleviate similar conditions as those individuals who are using CBD products.

About the Data: Results are based on telephone interviews conducted June 19-July 12, 2019, with a random sample of 2,543 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
