A total of 110 new magazines were launched in the first quarter of 2009, while 95 folded during the same period, according to statistics from MediaFinder.com, writes MediaBuyerPlanner.

The new entrants to the magazine category include Purpose Driven Connection, Disney Twenty-Three and? PopSci Genius Guide, a digital magazine.

Magazines that folded include Domino, Travel & Leisure Golf and Hallmark. Additionally, 16 magazines ceased print operations and are moving entirely online, Mediafinder said.

Of the new magazines launched, the categories that top the list include health/fitness, home/furnishings and family, with eight new titles in each category. New launches in those categories include Best You, Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade and Long Island Parent.

Regional magazines, which neared the top of the lists of new launches in each of the last two years, also top the list of ceased publications.

Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder parent Oxbridge Communications, said 110 new launches in the first quarter is a strong number, comparing favorably with new magazines launched in 2008, and shows the continued value of the medium. Last year, a total of 335 magazines launched, or about 83 per quarter.

Magazine revenues declined 14% in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the Publishers Information Bureau, and are expected to continue to decline. MediaBuyerPlanner also reports that eMarketer predicts consumer magazine ad spending to fall 16.2% in 2009.
