Flurry-Mobile-App-Usage-Growth-in-2013-by-Category-Jan2014Mobile application use grew by 115% year-over-year in 2013, reveals Flurry, which refers to usage as “a consumer launching an app and recording what Flurry defines as a session.” Each of the app categories tracked by Flurry saw usage grow over the course of the year, but no segment grew more rapidly than messaging (which includes social and photo apps), which more than tripled in use.

This category saw 203% year-over-year growth, not surprising given recent survey results indicating that smartphone owners across 5 markets ”“ the US, Brazil, China, South Africa and Indonesia ”“ are now more likely to be using social messaging applications on a daily basis than making voice calls, sending texts and emailing.

Following messaging apps, utilities and productivity apps – such as Evernote – also enjoyed strong growth, up 149% year-over-year. While other popular categories such as music, media and entertainment (+78%), lifestyle and shopping (+77%) and games (+68%) couldn’t match the overall rate of growth, they still displayed solid increases.

For the year as a whole, Flurry says it tracked a total of 1.126 trillion sessions, including a record 4.7 billion on the last day of the year.
