Web and Mobile App Types Regularly Used by Americans

November 27, 2013

Ipsos-Regularly-Visited-Web-and-Mobile-Apps-Nov2013Which types of internet and mobile applications do Americans regularly use? Ipsos, which recently revealed the types of websites most regularly visited by Americans, has some answers. According to newly-released survey results from the researcher, weather apps are regularly used by 46% of Americans, easily topping banking/financial apps (29%), music-related apps (28%) and news apps (25%), although shopping apps and social networking apps were curiously – and somewhat disappointingly – not included in the survey.

As would be expected, the 18-34 age group emerged as the most likely to regularly visit each of the app types listed. There was more variety when breaking the data down by age group, with females more likely to regularly use weather apps than males (49% vs. 42%), with the opposite true for news apps (31% for males; 20% for females).

There were also some interesting variances between the apps most commonly used by Americans and those most commonly used across the 27-country average. For example, while a greater proportion of Americans professed to regularly using weather apps than the average (46% vs. 39%), Americans proved far less likely to use news apps (25% vs. 39%). (In the survey regarding their most regularly visited website types, Americans also emerged as less likely to visit news and information sites than the global average.)

Also of note: 59% of US respondents claimed to regularly visit at least one of the app types listed, significantly below the 71% average globally.

About the Data: The research was conducted on the “G@46” wave between June 4-18th, 2013. The monthly Global @dvisor data output is derived from a balanced online sample in 27 countries around the world via the Ipsos Online Panel system. For the results of the survey, an international sample of 19,514 adults aged 18-64 in the US and Canada, and age 16-64 in all other countries, were interviewed.

Approximately 1000+ individuals participated on a country by country basis via the Ipsos Online Panel with the exception of Argentina, Belgium, Hungary, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and Turkey, where each have a sample approximately 500+. The precision of Ipsos online polls are calculated using a credibility interval. In this case, a poll of 1,000 is accurate to +/- 3.5 percentage points and one of 500 is accurate to +/- 5.0 percentage points in their respective general populations. In countries where internet penetration is approximately 60% or higher the data output is weighted to reflect the general population.
