mocospace-mobile-phone-games.jpg66% of men aged over 30 spend more than 1 hour a day playing games on their mobile phone, compared to 50% of men aged 12-29, according to a January 2012 MocoSpace survey that polled 15,000 of its mobile gaming community. Women aged over 30 showed an even greater propensity towards mobile gaming consumption: 74% said they spend more than an hour a day playing games, including 27% who reported spending more than 3 hours a day.

  • New research survey results from NPD In-Stat indicate that the size of a device’s screen creates an optimal use case for the device. Specifically, larger screen devices seem to fulfill productive needs, while smaller screen devices tend to satisfy communication or entertainment needs.
  • 50% of marketers from large and small businesses in a variety of industries already use 2D barcodes as part of their overall marketing strategy, and 86% plan to use the technology in the near future, according to a January 2012 study from Scanbuy. Difference in awareness of 2D barcodes between large and small businesses is relatively minimal at 95% and 89%, respectively. The top 3 content choices that the codes link to include product details, promotions, and coupon offers, while the top 3 media placement choices included magazines and newspapers, direct mail, and product packaging. When asked if they were happy with their experience, those that used a paid service were 50% more satisfied than those using a freeware generator.
  • In 2011, for the first time, digital track sales were larger than physical sales, accounting for 50.3% of all music purchases, according to a report from Billboard and Nielsen Soundscan. Digital album sales broke the 100 million mark for the first time with a new peak of 103.1 million sales, representing an almost 20% increase from 86.3 million in 2010.

About the Data: The Scanbuy results are based on a survey of more than 100 marketers from large and small businesses in industries such as healthcare, retail, and entertainment. The NPD In-Stat survey was completed by 652 respondents.
