Smartphone Ownership Climbs 15%

The number of US smartphone owners rose 15% between the three months ending in June 2010 and the three months ending in September 2010, according to comScore MobiLens data.

Smartphone Ownership Hits 59M
During the three month-average ending in September 2010, 58.7 million Americans owned smartphones. This represents a 15% increase from a little more than 51 million during the three-month average ending in June 2010. A total of 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices during the three month-average ending in September 2010.

Android Platform Grows
Google, primarily driven by sales of its Android platform, continues to gain ground in the US smartphone market, rising 6.5 percentage points to capture 21.4% of smartphone subscribers in the three-month average ending September 2010, good for third place.

RIM was the leading mobile smartphone platform in the US with a 37.3% share of smartphone subscribers, followed by Apple with 24.3% share. Microsoft accounted for 10% of smartphone subscribers, taking fourth place, while Palm rounded out the top five with 4.2%.

Despite losing share to Google Android, most smartphone platforms continue to gain subscribers as the smartphone market overall continues to grow.

Samsung Top Mobile OEM
Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top mobile OEM during the three-month average ending in September 2010, with 23.5% of US mobile subscribers, up 0.7 percentage points from the three-month period ending in June. LG ranked second with 21.1% share, followed by Motorola (18.4% share), RIM (9.3% share, up 0.5 percentage points) and Nokia (7.4% share).

2 in 3 Mobile Users Texts
In the three-month average ending September 2010, 67% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.4 percentage points compared to the prior three-month period.

Meanwhile, browsers were used by 35.1% of US mobile subscribers (up 2.2 percentage points). Subscribers who used downloaded applications comprised 33.1% of the mobile audience, representing an increase of 2.5 percentage points. Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 1.8 percentage points, representing 23.2% of mobile subscribers. Playing games represented 23.1% of the mobile audience (up 0.5 percentage points), while listening to music increased 0.8 percentage points, representing 15.2% of subscribers.

Moms Text at Home, Use Apps Elsewhere
A majority of moms who own mobile phones text at home, but use mobile applications outside the home, according to the September 2010 S.M.A.R.T. Report from Millennial Media. Study results show that a majority of mom mobile phone owners perform most mobile activities at home. For example, 66% most often send and receive text messages at home, while 57% most often listen to mobile music at home and 53% most often play mobile games at home.

However, at home/away performance of mobile internet and video activity among moms is equal (50% each). And a strong 71% of moms do most of their mobile application activity outside the home.
