July 26, 2010

Savings generated from digital coupons doubled between June 30, 2009 and June 30, 2010, according to Coupons.com.

Digital Coupons Produce $1B in Savings
More than $1 billion in digital coupon savings was printed or loaded to a store loyalty card via Coupons.com and the Coupons.com network in the last 12 months. This represents about 100% growth from $529 million in savings generated between June 30, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

Ready to Eat Cereal Proves Popular
For the first half of 2010, Ready to Eat Cereal was the most popular product category for both online printable and coupons accessed via mobile apps, and was the seventh-most popular product category for coupons saved to loyalty cards. Dairy & Eggs was the top category for Save to Card coupons.

The next three most-popular product categories were also identical for both online printable and mobile coupons: Yogurt, Refrigerated Dough, and Vegetables. Portable Snacks came in fifth for online printable coupons, while Lunch Meats came in fifth for mobile coupons.

For coupons saved to loyalty cards, the top five most popular product categories were rounded out by Lunch Meats, Yogurt, Baby Needs – Other, and Ice Cream.

Coupons.com research indicates the deeper variance in the top product categories for Save to Card coupons compared to the other two lists is attributed to the fact that brands geo-target campaigns to areas where local supermarkets carry their products which results in a different set of coupons available for consumer selection.

South, Midwest Dominate Digital Coupon Use
Georgia tops the list of most active states using digital coupons both via Web browsers and mobile apps (including the Grocery iQ and Coupons.com mobile apps), based on Coupons.com data. Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Utah round out the top five for states using digital coupons via a web browser.
