Mobile Gambling Has Good Chance for Growth

September 3, 2010

Global growth in mobile lottery and casino wagering, as well as convenience and privacy, will spur a substantial increase in mobile gambling revenues, according to a new white paper from Juniper Research.

Global Wagering to Reach $48B
“Good Odds for Mobile Gambling” findings indicate total global wagers on mobile gambling services will reach about $48 billion USD by 2015. Steady growth in the vertical has been occurring in the past two years despite the worldwide economic downturn, mainly in the mobile betting niche.

However, much of the growth predicted to occur during the next several years will be driven by what are currently the small niches of mobile casino and lottery gambling. Casino gambling, which is currently producing a much smaller portion of total mobile wagering than betting, will grow to a roughly equal share of the total by 2015.

Furthermore, mobile lotteries, which today produce virtually no revenue, will substantially increase by 2015, although they will still represent a relatively small portion of the total. Juniper analysis suggests that the emergence of numerous mobile lotteries in the past 12 to 18 months, particularly in the Chinese, Latin American and African markets, will drive this future growth.

Juniper rates the UK as having the most liberal mobile gambling regulations of any major country and says the UK is at the forefront of mobile gambling growth. All projections are based on legal gambling operations.

Convenience, Privacy, Ubiquity Aid Growth
Beyond the emergence of legal opportunities to gamble via mobile device, Juniper says the three factors most responsible for driving the growth of mobile gambling are convenience, privacy and ubiquity. For example, many smartphone app developers are creating gambling apps, and Apple has reversed a previous position banning such apps and now allows them to be sold through the App Store.

Following is more detailed summary of each of the three factors Juniper says will bolster the global growth of mobile gambling in the next five years:

Americans Visit Gambling Sites
While figures do not break down the percentage of visitors using mobile devices, there was an 11% increase in the number of unique US visitors to online gambling sites in July 2010, according to comScore. The main event of the World Series of Poker annual tournament took place in July 2010, likely spurring interest in the game among Americans. More than 13.4 million people visited an online gambling site during the month, with poker-themed sites among the most popular.
