Pew-Reddit-Usage-by-Age-Gender-July20136% of online adults use reddit, finds a new study [pdf] from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, a figure that puts it on par with Tumblr. While use of both sites is higher among 18-29-year-olds (11% for reddit; 13% for Tumblr), the platforms differ when sorting by gender. Whereas there is no overall gender disparity in Tumblr usage, reddit is twice as popular among men than women (8% vs. 4%). And nowhere is that disparity more evident than in the 18-29 bracket.

Within this group, men are 3 times as likely as women to use reddit (15% vs. 5%). That also means that 18-29-year-old online males are 2-and-a-half times more likely than the average online adult to use reddit.

Looking at some other demographic breakdowns, the report reveals that:

  • Only 2% of online adults aged 50 and older use reddit;
  • Usage is particularly high among Hispanics (11%), and is slightly below-average among whites (5%) and blacks (4%);
  • There is no clear linear pattern when sorting by educational attainment or household income; and
  • Just 2% of rural online adults use the site, compared to 6% of suburban online adults and 7% of urban online adults.

About the Data: The data is based on a survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International of 2,252 national adults aged 18 and older, including 1,127 cell phone interviews. The survey was fielded from 4/17/2013-5/19/2013.
