Germany’s Online Audience Europe’s Largest; Turkey’s Most Engaged

Of the 17 European countries individually tracked in April 2009, Germany’s online audience was the continent’s largest, racking up 40 million unique visitors during the month, according to data from comScore World Metrix service.

In terms of unique visitors, comScore reported that the UK (36.8 million visitors), and France (36.3 million visitors) had the second- and third-largest online audiences. Russia and Italy rounded out the top five.

Turkish View Most Internet Pages

At the same time as it issued European audience data for April, comScore also released its first report detailing the online behavior of internet users in Turkey, which had the seventh largest online audience in Europe. According to the report, more than 17 million people in Turkey ages 15+ accessed the internet from a home or work location, consuming an average 3,044 pages per visitor. These numbers also give Turkey the second-largest audience in Eastern Europe, behind Russia (31.3 million visitors).

Additionally, comScore said Turkey’s online population is the most engaged in Europe.? On average, the Turkish spend 32 hours online and view an average of 3,044 pages of content per month.

“The online population of Turkey far surpasses the rest of Europe in terms of time spent and content consumed per person,” said Mike Read, SVP and managing director, comScore Europe. “Much of this heavy engagement is driven by usage of social networking and entertainment media sites, which maintain users’ attention for extended periods of time.”

Top 15 Internet Properties in Turkey

Google Sites ranked as the largest property in Turkey with more than 16 million visitors in April 2009, a reach of 90% of the total online population. Microsoft Sites ranked second with 15.5 million, followed by social networking site Facebook.com (12.8 million visitors) and DOL (10.1 million visitors), owner of Turkish-based entertainment and sports sites Ekolay and Fanatik.
