The world’s most valuable retail brands experienced a 33% growth in brand value this year, according to data from BrandZ. Reaching a total of $1.4 trillion, the top 75 most valuable global retail brands saw their worth grow by $339 billion from 2018.

BrandZ arrives at its brand value by multiplying the brand’s financial value (the amount of corporate earnings attributed to a particular brand) by brand contribution (a percentage of financial value). Brand value is defined as “the dollar amount a brand contributes to the overall value of a corporation.”

Amazon once again sits at the top of the list as the most valuable retail brand. According to the report, its Brand Value in 2019 is $315.5 billion, an increase of 91% over 2018. Amazon’s Brand Value is more than the next three most valuable brands combined.

Although Amazon’s reputation has taken a hit as consumers are starting to question its ethics, the e-commerce behemoth’s value to consumers has remained intact as it has made itself almost indispensable – and the first product search destination for online shoppers.

Chinese conglomerate, Alibaba Group, is considered the world’s largest online and mobile commerce business. Alibaba Group’s Brand Value for 2019 is $131.2 billion, representing a 48% increase over last year. McDonald’s ranks closely behind Alibaba Group with a Brand Value of $130.4 billion (up 18% from 2018).

US home improvement giant, The Home Depot, ranked 4th on the list with a Brand Value of $53.5 billion. There may be a pattern brewing for Home Depot, as it ranked 4th overall on Morning Consult’s list of most loved brands in America as well as 4th among Baby Boomers on the same list.

In the #5 spot is Nike which saw a 38% rise in Brand Value between 2018 and 2019, to $47.4 billion.

The brands rounding out the top 10 are as follows:

  • Louis Vuitton (#6 – Brand Value: $47.2 billion)
  • Starbucks (#7 – Brand Value: $45.9 billion)
  • CHANEL (#8 – Brand Value: $37.0 billion)
  • Walmart (#9 – Brand Value: $36.8 billion)
